SAINT JOHN'S RESORT HISTORY

Saint John's Resort is a facility rich with history and beauty. The story begins in the late 1940s when St. John's Provincial Seminary opened it's doors. In 1955, its remarkable chapel was dedicated. The seminary continued to serve the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit until 1988, when it closed. The property remained dormant until 1994, when Cardinal Adam J. Maida brought to life a vision of reviving the property as a resource for diocesan youth and families. His vision became reality when, in 1996, St. John's Center for Youth & Family opened.

The rebirth of the historic facility surged again in 1998, when work commenced on an $11 million redevelopment of St. John's main buildings into a comprehensive center for corporate and social conferences, wedding receptions, Catholic ceremonies and celebrations. Upon completion of the careful restoration process, October 2000 marked the Grand Opening of St. John's Golf & Conference Center. The center features stately Romanesque architecture, beautifully renovated to reflect its heritage; two regal ballrooms showcasing 25-foot ceilings with hand-painted inlays; a breathtaking two-story Atrium room; and twenty-two distinct meeting rooms, each with exterior windows for a bright, comfortable setting.

December 2005 marked yet another significant milestone in the property's history - the introduction of our Grand Ballroom, the largest ballroom at the conference center, with seating for up to 450. Along with the introduction of the Grand Ballroom in late 2005, the facility also introduced a new name, The Inn at St. John's; a name which encompasses the entire property.

A dramatic piece of St. John's history took place in January 2006; the opening of The Inn at St. John's hotel and restaurant addition. This upscale property features 118 luxury guestrooms and offers every convenience of a large hotel in an intimate setting. 5ive Restaurant, just off the hotel lobby, offers guests and locals alike a casually upscale dining experience with a 70-seat restaurant, martini lounge and al fresco dining on the outdoor terrace in season.

The year 2009 saw both exciting and sad developments at The Inn at St. John's. Early in the year, we were pleased to introduce our new Garden Gallery, an open, airy pre-function space just outside the Grand Ballroom. Sadly, the year ended with the close of The Retreat Center at St. John's (formerly St. John's Center for Youth and Family).

During the summer of 2013, The Inn at St. John's proudly introduced The Burger Loft with a comfortable vintage-inspired atmosphere and an emphasis on Burgers. Done. Right. Open during the golf season, the Burger Loft served both players and local diners alike. In 2016, 5ive Restaurant underwent a beautiful renovation and proudly introduced a new concept when it became 5ive Steakhouse.

About the Golf Course

The seminarians of St. John's are credited with designing the original Mission Hill's Golf Course during St. John's earliest years. In the 1970's the original 9 holes were redesigned and an additional holes were added under the direction of Jerry Matthews. In the late 1990's, 9 new holes were added and designed by Pat Grelak, resulting in the 27-hole course that was known as St. John's Golf Course.

In 2021 William Pulte Family Management purchased The Inn at St. John's from the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. 100% of profits from the resort go to The Pulte Family Charitable Foundation and are used to serve those most in need around the Metro Detroit area and the world. The late William Pulte worked closely with a small group of business leaders and Cardinal Maida to finance and develop the former St. John's Seminary campus into a hotel, conference center and golf course.

The Pulte Family looks forward to upholding the rich history of the property, ensuring it's continued legacy and value in the local community
